Birth Story

Okay, so I probably will not be blogging much for a while, bc I don't wanna be on the computer for long amounts of time when I can be hanging out with my little girl. Plus, there's lots of housework I've gotten behind on. But, I promised the birth story so here it is.

Little Evlyn was just not ready by her due date (Mother's Day), and the doctor wanted to induce me on Monday, the day after. I really wanted her to come on her own, so I asked if we could push it back. It got pushed 2 days, to Wed. at 6am. Well, despite lots of contractions, she did not come before the induction.

So, On Wednesday morning, a very tired(couldn't sleep much)/scared/excited Kayla and her hubby Jared made their way to the hospital to have a baby. I was dilated to a 3 when I got there, and was already having contractions when they hooked me up to the monitor. It was fun hearing Evlyn's heartbeat on it! So, Jared and I relaxed, played backgammon, talked, watched Saved By the Bell, and just waited. They put me on the pitocin at around 8am, and we continued to watch the monitor to see how close the contractions were getting. They began to get stronger and stronger, and I really wanted to try without the epidural. Jared was really sweet and tried to help me through each contraction. He held my hand and massaged my back, and tried to comfort me. However, after a few hours they got really bad and I decided to get the epidural. Once that kicked in, it was so weird! I couldn't move my legs. I got that feeling back though and was able to.

The problem was, the epidural made my blood pressure drop. I started to feel really tired and dizzy, and then the nurse came in and told me that they needed me on oxygen to bring my blood pressure back up. It finally went back to normal, and the nurses started saying it's because I'm a redhead, and that happens to red heads a lot. I also started to get the shakes, even though I wasn't cold. It was driving me crazy, because I couldn't figure out how to make them stop. Then the nurse told me that was another side effect of the epidural. Well, anyway, they decided to break my water at around 11:30 or noon, and I was 90% effaced and dilated to a 4. The nurse said she thought I'd be ready to have the baby around 4pm. Well, a little later, the nurse checked me and surprised said, you're at an 8! My mom came probably around 12:30 or 1pm, and talked and hung out. Evlyn's heart rate started to drop with each contraction, so they gave me the oxygen again and had me lay on my side. That did the trick! The nurse was surprised a little later when I was at a 10. She said the baby was right there and it was time to push. My mom left the room so that it could be just me and Jared with the doctors. So, I pushed during the contractions and about 30 minutes later beautiful little Evlyn was born. They laid her on my stomach and it was so surreal. I thought, "hey, here's a cute little baby!" Then I thought, "wait, this is our baby!" It still didn't really hit until we came home 2 days later. So, at 1:54 pm little Evlyn Rose Morris was born. She weighed 7 lbs. 10 oz. and was 20.5 inches long. We both love her so much and think she is so beautiful!

I had a checkup appointment Wednesday, and found out that I've lost 19 lbs. in the first week. They didn't say if that was good or bad, so hopefully that's normal? I'm curious to know how much I lost right away, besides the 7lbs. 10 oz. that Evlyn weighed. For some reason I find it interested to see how much the placenta and everything else weighed. Oh well.

The following pictures are the day she was born.

  1. Yay! Thanks for telling the story! I love hearing those! That is kind of scary! Knowing when to expect going in to the hospital for the baby, I like the surprise better! I got an epidural as well, but it never kicked in. The nurses were confused and the anesthesiologist couldn't figure out why either. And also I think it is probably normal to loose weight fast. I only gained 14 pounds my whole pregnancy and I lost 19 lbs the day after having James when they weighed me. Sorry, I put too much info about myself but I love seeing how our stories are similar and how they are different. Love you Kayla! I hope you adjust to your new lifestyle as quick as you can! You are awesome!
